The use of wine stamps (wine banderoles) was abolished on 1.10.2001

All kinds of stamps, wafers as well as band shaped labels, was abolished for wine products on 1 October 2001 by request of the Danish Trade Association of Wine and Spirits ("Vin og Spiritus Organisationen i Danmark"). The aim was to ease the administative burdens of the wine companies and wine traders. However, the wine duties continued as usual. Wine containers already equipped with banderoles before 1 October 2001 were not obliged to have the stamps removed. The use of stamps for (the more heavily taxed) spirits continues as usual.

The National Customs and Tax Authorities, as a service towards the companies, were able to deliver three kinds of wine banderoles: 1) without statement of additives, 2) banderoles stating that sulfites were added, and 3) banderoles stating that both sulfites and sorbates were added. This service was offered in order to fulfill the demands of the Foodstuff Administration (Danish: "Levnedsmiddelstyrelsen"), which claims that the use of additives should be stated and specified on all wine products. However, as the use of yellow wafers now has come to an end, the companies have to find other ways to inform about additives. Many companies are now producing their own labels with statement of additives, all having the same size as the old yellow banderole wafers, probably because this size fits the bottles and the label affixing machines. So the new wafers are NOT fiscal objects. They are private labels informing about additives. Examples are shown above (diameter 22 mm).
